The Artists Behind the Japanese Alternate-Art Planeswalkers

There could never be a better time for two of my favourite things to come together: Magic the Gathering and Japanese art.

In Japanese boosters for War of the Spark, players have a chance to find the 36 planeswalkers… with alternate-art. Of course, everyone’s already going crazy for the contribution by Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano, however there are many other talented artists included within the set, including lead character designer for Valkyria Revolution, Toshiyaki Takayama. In 2010, two Japanese alternate-arts were released when Wizards reissued the Jace vs. Chandra duel deck in Japanese (art by Himori Yoshino/日森 よしの). So after 9 years, it’s time for more!

This post will show the original and alternate-artwork cards side-by-side, list some of the previous work of each of the 28 Japanese artists and link to the artists’ official pages. You’ll begin to notice a couple of games reoccurring in the list below, as many of them have worked on the same Japanese trading cards games. Here are the 36 Japanese alternate-art Magic the Gathering cards!

If possible, the links will lead to the artists’ Pixiv or Twitter accounts. If they do not have one, or a link cannot be found, their personal website will be linked instead. All images are copyright Wizards of the Coast.
